Citadel of Cascais

The Citadel of Cascais is located in the Village, Town and County of the same name, District of Lisbon, Portugal.

On the right bank of the Tagus River, it is a fortified complex that also includes:

- Tower of St. Anthony of Cascais.

The set had the job of defending that part of the coast, access to capital, Lisbon.

The Citadel

At the time of the Philippine Dynasty under the reign of Philip II of Spain (1580-1598), designed the expansion and enhancement of this defense, registered in the vast scheme of the defense bar of the Tagus River (1590).

This project, however, was never fully implemented and has been limited to the strengthening and expansion of the original tower, having received the plant in a triangular shape, was reopened under the invocation of Our Lady of Light

Our days

The whole of the Citadel of Cascais, including the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Luz, the Torre de Santo António Cascais, and all the fortified part which lies between the tip of the Psalmody and the Clube Naval de Cascais, is classified as Property of Public Interest through Decree No. 129/77 of 29 September 1977.

More recently, following the release of the Citadel to the Municipality of Cascais, this local authority studies designed to revitalize it and its surroundings, one of the most quoted aimed at recovery and implementation, there, a museum.

Features

The stronghold of Cascais is subdivided into three parts:

call the Citadel, occupied by the army prior to the transfer to the City Council;
the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Luz (formerly affects the General Staff of the Navy and has also transferred) and;
Palace, affect the presidency, the House whose assignment has been negotiating recently.

Curiosities

It was in the Bay of Cascais that the Duke of Alba arrived in 1580, to take possession of Portugal on behalf of Philip II of Spain.

In the context of the Restoration of Independence, the stronghold of Cascais started coordinating line of defensive fortifications on the right bank of the Tagus, such as Crismina Fort, the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Guia, and others.

In the context of the Peninsular War in Cascais was that General Junot Andoche Jean-settled. Here also signed its surrender (1808).

It was left to the Citadel in 1810, to the battle of Bussaco, the 19th Infantry Regiment [1], under the protection of St. Anthony, whose image is still in the Citadel.

It was inaugurated at the Citadel, the September 28, 1878, the electric lighting in the country.

The Citadel was used as a royal residence from 1871, and died in her King Louis I. Cascais was the Portuguese royal family started going to the beach. Since then several important families began to settle there, raising their palaces, which turned the village into a cosmopolitan community.

After the Proclamation of the Republic, the Palace was dependent on the presidency, having been used mainly by Oscar Carmona who lived there almost all the time he was President.

Cidadela de Cascais

A Cidadela de Cascais localiza-se na Vila, Freguesia e Concelho de mesmo nome, Distrito de Lisboa, em Portugal.

Na margem direita do rio Tejo, trata-se de um complexo fortificado que compreende ainda:

o Forte de Nossa Senhora da Luz de Cascais, e
a Torre de Santo António de Cascais.

O conjunto tinha a função de defesa daquele trecho da costa, acesso à capital, Lisboa.

A Cidadela

À época da Dinastia Filipina, sob o reinado de Filipe II de Espanha (1580-1598), foi projetada a ampliação e reforço desta defesa, inscrita no vasto plano de defesa da barra do rio Tejo (1590).

Esse projeto, entretanto, não chegou a ser plenamente implementado, tendo se limitado ao reforço e ampliação da primitiva torre que, tendo recebido planta no formato triangular, foi reinaugurada sob a invocação de Nossa Senhora da Luz.

Os nossos dias

O conjunto da Cidadela de Cascais, incluindo o Forte de Nossa Senhora da Luz, a Torre de Santo António de Cascais, e toda a parte fortificada que está compreendida entre a Ponta do Salmodo e o Clube Naval de Cascais, encontra-se classificado como Imóvel de Interesse Público através do Decreto nº 129/77 de 29 de Setembro de 1977.

Mais recentemente, após a cedência da Cidadela à Câmara Municipal de Cascais, esta autarquia estudava projetos para revitalizá-la e à sua zona envolvente, um dos mais cotados visando a sua recuperação e implementação, ali, de um museu.

Características

A Praça-forte de Cascais encontra-se subdividida em três partes:

a chamada Cidadela, ocupada pelo Exército antes da cedência à Câmara Municipal;
a Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora da Luz (anteriormente afeta ao Estado-Maior da Armada e também já cedida) e;
o Palácio, afeto à Presidência da República, cuja cedência a Câmara vem negociando recentemente.

Curiosidades

Foi na baía de Cascais que o duque de Alba desembarcou, em 1580, para tomar posse de Portugal em nome de Filipe II de Espanha.

No contexto da Restauração da Independência, a praça-forte de Cascais passou a coordenar a linha de fortificações defensivas da margem direita do Tejo, como por exemplo o Forte de Crismina, o Forte de Nossa Senhora da Conceição e o Forte de Nossa Senhora da Guia, entre outros.

No contexto da Guerra Peninsular foi em Cascais que o general Jean-Andoche Junot se instalou. Aqui também assinou a sua rendição (1808).

Foi da Cidadela que partiu, em 1810, para a batalha do Buçaco, o Regimento 19 de Infantaria[1], sob a protecção de Santo António, cuja imagem ainda se encontra na Cidadela.

Foi na Cidadela que se inaugurou, a 28 de Setembro de 1878, a iluminação eléctrica no país.

A Cidadela foi utilizada como residência real a partir de 1871, nela tendo falecido o rei D. Luís I. Foi em Cascais que a Família Real Portuguesa começou a ir à praia. A partir de então diversas famílias importantes começaram a estabelecer-se ali, erguendo os seus palácios, o que transformou a povoação numa comunidade cosmopolita.

Após a Proclamação da República, o Palácio ficou dependente da Presidência da República, tendo sido utilizado sobretudo por Óscar Carmona que ali viveu quase todo o tempo em que foi Presidente da República.
